Learning about the Presidents
Throughout the month of February, the preschool students at Mills have been studying the presidents of the past.  More specifically, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  We talked about how they dressed and traveled in different ways than we do now, but their mission was to be good leaders and make good choices.

African Drummer Performance
As a kick-off to Black History Month events, African drummer, Sogbety Diomande, performed for Mills elementary school students on Wednesday, February 6, 2013.  The performance was offered by Firelands Symphony with support from the Wightman-Wieber, Stein and Mylander foundations.

3D Art
Have you ever wondered how artist make drawings on flat paper look like they are popping off the paper? Mrs. Shepherd's 5th grade students at Mills Elementary learned how to do this using one point perspective, shading and highlighting in pastel.

As in years past, Mills Student Council has been busy this year with various projects.

A Visit to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center
Did you know that Rutherford B. Hayes was the first president to have a telephone and typewriter in the White House, or that Hayes was the first president to have a presidential library and museum created to store his presidential papers? These are just a few of the many interesting facts that the Mills fourth grade students learned before they traveled to Fremont, Ohio to tour the Hayes’s house and museum. At the Hayes estate the students first toured the beautifully restored Hayes home.
All About Butterflies
In first grade we read the story I Am a Butterfly by Stephen Swinburne.  This is a nonfiction story about the life cycle of a butterfly.  We made a life cycle chain (displayed in the hall)  to show the metamorphosis a caterpillar goes through to become a butterfly.
