Ohio Farm to School Newsletter Article
The Ohio Farm to School Initiative recently honored The Sandusky City Schools Dining and Food Services Department in its November Newsletter. The Farm to School program is part of the USDA national network and involves many local, state and regional partners, advisors and projects. OSU Extension, in The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, provides leadership for this statewide program and representation in the national network. The program is intended to provide children with fresh, locally grown or raised food, and to educate them about many aspects of agriculture while supporting local farmers and communities.

The “Ohio Success Story” featured in the newsletter identifies The Sandusky City Schools as one of the first schools in Ohio to become active in Farm to School. Dining and Food Services Supervisor Brad Kraft has partnered with local farmers such as Tender Shoot Farm and Eshelman’s Orchard to meet the challenge of feeding 3,500 students. Fresh fruit is offered in all schools for breakfast and lunch every day and fresh vegetables are available at lunch. Mr. Kraft and his staff are proud of the “fresh” standard that is upheld in the schools’ kitchens; no canned or frozen (with the exception of corn) vegetables or fruits are served. Nutritional information is presented to students on television monitors throughout the cafeteria to encourage educated decisions both in and outside of school.
